Czech Cookbooks in Canadian Kitchens

The Embassy of the Czech Republic in Ottawa together with the Czech School Ottawa organized yet another Czech Book Club gathering devoted to the art of cooking.

The Book Club was held on Tuesday, February 28, 2023, at the premises of the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Ottawa.

The participants leafed through their grandmother's cookbooks together and talked about family recipes and traditions.

Kristýna Poláčková, a teacher at the Montreal Czech School who also makes chocolate pralines by hand, told how this passion of hers turned into the successful functioning of her (so far) small confectionery company. The Czech professional chef Anna Vejvodová, who is staying in Canada as part of the Youth Working Holiday program, shared her experiences from everyday cooking life in the Czech Republic, Mexico and Canada with the audience.

The evening was also interspersed with a competition for the best cold cuisine recipe. 15 participants submitted their culinary creations to the competition, who also shared recipes for preparing their delicacies with the guests. In the sweet section of the competition, the recipe of Drahomíra Čech, who at the age of 92 prepared excellent cuts with her daughter Vlasta Čech, won. In the savory section the classic Czech rolls of Lenka Kašparová were the winners.

The event was another example of the embassy's excellent cooperation with the Ottawa Czech School, through which we aim to support Czech traditions, the Czech language, cohesion and activity of the Czech community in Canada.
