Dr. Michelle Cipera - Life as a Doctor in Canada's Far North

The Embassy of the Czech Republic in cooperation with the Czech School Ottawa cordially invite you to a talk with dr. Michelle Cipera about her inspiring journey as a doctor serving in Indigenous communities in far north Quebec.

Dr. Michelle Cipera was born and raised in Ottawa within a Czech family. She is one of four granddaughters of Dominik Čipera, the closest associate of Tomas Bata in Zlín, who fled communist Czechoslovakia in 1948 to join Bata Shoe Company in Batawa, Ontario, with his wife Božena and their two sons. Like her three sisters, Míša pursued studies in sciences, ultimately graduating with a medical degree from the University of Ottawa in 1993, followed by a residency in Family Medicine at McGill University.

Michelle spent over 20 years as a family doctor in Inuit and Cree communities of Northern Quebec. Now back in Ottawa, she is dedicated to nurturing the Czech Canadian community and collaborating with the city of Zlín to preserve the legacy of her grandfather's social mission. Building on her experience in Quebec's Far North, she is also tutoring Indigenous Health issues to medical students at her Alma Mater, including topics of cultural safety, health equity and inclusion.
