Pianist Jan Čmejla performed in Ottawa

On the occasion of the 105th anniversary of the foundation of the independent Czechoslovak state, the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Ottawa, in cooperation with the Consulate General of the Czech Republic in Toronto, organized the concert of a Czech talented pianist Jan Čmejla.

Jan has won several important music competitions and is considered one of the most talented young musicians in the Czech Republic. He performed works by Leos Janacek, Antonin Dvorak, Jean Phillip Rameau a Frédéric Chopin. 

The concert took place on Thursday, October 26, at 6:30 pm at the Carleton Dominion-Chalmers Centre in Ottawa.
 
In the presence of the Czech ambassador-designate in Canada, His Excellency Martin Tlapa, the guests were welcomed first by Mr. John Brassard, member of the Canadian Parliament and chairman of the parliamentary group of Czech-Canadian friendship, then by the reperesentative of Carleton University,  on which ground the concert took place, Mrs. Betina Appel Kuzmarov, vice-president for research and international cooperation , and finally the ambassador's deputy Mr. Aleš Opatrný introduced the artist.

Not only Czech compatriots, but also important representatives of the diplomatic corps and the Canadian political and academic community were represented in the ranks of the numerous audience. The audience was thrilled by Jan Čmejla's extraordinary musical performance and rewarded him with thunderous applause and a standing ovation. As an encore, Jan Čmejla played a piece by a contemporary Czech music composer Adam Skoumal, whose piano works he plans to record next year.

 The concert thus became a dignified celebration of Czech statehood.

 

Biography:

Jan Čmejla was born in 2003 in Prague. He has been playing the piano since the age of six, and since his eight years he also has studied composition. He got the first musical education at the Music School of Ilja Hurník and at the Secondary School and the Music School of the City of Prague, where he studied under the guidance of professor Taťána Vejvodová and Lukáš Klánský. Since 2018 he has been studying the Prague Conservatory under the guidance of Prof. Eva Boguniová.

Jan has won several music competitions, such as the international competition Virtuosi per musica di pianoforte in Ústí nad Labem (2013, 2018), Chopin for the Youngest (2015), Novak International Piano Competition (2015), Peter Toperczer International Piano Competition Košice (2017; 2nd prize), Beethoven’s Teplice (2018) and Concertino Praga (2019). He is a laureate of the prestigious prize “Golden Nut“ (2013) addressed to the most talented children in the Czech Republic and of the Kern Foundation Prize awarded by excellent Russian pianist Olga Kern.

Thanks to his success in music competitions he had the opportunity to perform with the Brno Philharmonic Orchestra (2014), the Prague Symphonic Orchestra (2015, 2017), the North Czech Philharmonic Teplice (2019), the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra (2019) and performed at the Prague Music Festival 2016 with violinist Václav Hudeček.

His artistic inspiration is the Chinese pianist Lang Lang, with whom he personally met in Vienna as a participant in the Allianz Junior Music Camp 2015, which is annually dedicated to a dozen selected talents from around the world.
