Conference "Power of the Powerless: Masaryk, Patočka, Havel" in Riga

The International conference "The Power of the Powerless: Masaryk, Patočka, Havel" organized by the Faculty of History and Philosophy of the University of Latvia, the Philosophical Faculty of Charles University in Prague and the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Riga under the patronage of ex-president of Latvia H. E. Vaira Vīķe-Freiberg took place on 25-26 February 2017. 

The conference was opened by Ambassador Miroslav Kosek and former Latvian President Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga. Among the distinguished speakers of the conference were Mr. Václav Bělohradský, the famous Czech philosopher, professor and sociologist, Mr. Ivan M. Havel, , brother of the former Czech Prezident Václav Havel, Mr. Tomáš Hoskovec, chairman of the Prague Linguistic Circle, Mr. Ludger Hagedorn, head of Jan Patočka‘s archives and programmes of the Viennese Institute of Humanities and philosophers, scientists and historians from the University of Latvia, Charles University and the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic.

The speeches concerned the political, philosophical and literary link of Vaclav Havel and its Latvian context, the up-to-date thinking of Jan Patočka and Tomáš Garigu Masaryk and the prewar Czech philosophy and linguistics, the general problems of "powerless" as well as the past and present of the national minorities both in the Czech Republic and Latvia.

In the evening of 25th of October, a friendly meeting of conference organizers, lecturers, diplomats, members of the Latvian-Czech Society and other guests took place at the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Riga.

The conference was highly evaluated by the leading scientists, professionals and public.
