The USA supported Czechia as one of the participants in the Project Phoenix

On September 6, 2023, the representative of the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Bucharest, Mr. Juraj Melioris, participated in the presentation of the Project Phoenix, supported within the coal-to-nuclear small modular reactor (SMR) conversion program by the Bureau of International Security and Nonproliferation of the Unided States Department of State. The event took place at the Bucharest Polytechnic University and was one of the events on the sidelines of the Three Seas Summit held on September 6-7, 2023 in Bucharest. At the event, there was, among other things, confirmed the US support for the participation of the Czech company Sokolovská uhelná for the preparation of a feasibility study for the construction of SMR, which could replace energy production capacities based on fossil fuels. Other entities that will receive the mentioned support are from Slovakia, Poland and Romania. 

In the context of the above, the most important participant in the event was US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry. In his speech he confirmed an importance of the mentioned project and, among others, the Czech participation in it. On behalf of the Czech side, the representative of the Embassy, Juraj Melioris, gave a short speech to the participants.
